But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Timothy 6:11-14 NASB

How is God's Word like a Glass of Water? PDF Print E-mail

Now you may ask what I mean by this title. Well some time back I had an experience where I was just thirsty as could be. Now to let you in on a little secret, I am an avid soda drinker. In fact I would prefer to drink anything but water most of the time.

This one particular night brought me to a strange analogy as I contemplated being so thirsty.

You see I was so thirsty that I drank a little of everything I could except water. I drank my soda till I couldn’t drink anymore. Then I switched to apple juice, and when that didn’t work I tried milk. I was so thirsty that I could not sleep. Finally I went down stairs and fixed myself a tall cool glass of water. When I finished it, my body seemed to shout with joy. I felt my body relax, so I went to bed and right to sleep.

Now the next day as I thought about this experience, I felt God touch me on the shoulder, so to speak, and He lead me through what I am about to write.

You see God pointed out that my tongue is like my body (in biblical since) and my body was acting as the spirit of God living in me and that tall cool glass of water was the Word.

To give you a little background on what was going on in my life. I was at a stage that I was not spending a lot of time reading my bible or meditating on His Word. And I have to admit that I was not making time for God at all. Between work, my family, and trying to get my web store off the ground, I just did not have the time, at least not from my stand point. I would always say to myself, “I’ll get to it later” or “I spend a little extra time reading tomorrow.” But as good as my heart felt intensions were, I just never made the time.

Now back to where God was leading. As He pieced this together for me, I could see how my tongue (the body) and its desire and lack of discipline were starving for what made it feel good. But try as it might it was never satisfied. In fact the craving got stronger and stronger because what it was taking in was not satisfying the body thus a struggle ensued.

You see my tongue was acting like my bodies sinful nature. When we get away from God’s Word, our sinful nature starts coming out. God reminded me of what he told Cain in Gen. 4:7.

I saw that as I drifted further from the Word that my sinful nature started nudging me towards the things that I knew were wrong. In fact my body started craving these things that I had put away during my walk with Christ. I started feeling a strong urge to start drinking again, start viewing pornography, and I found myself looking at other women with lust in my heart. These were all things that I was heavily into before I found Jesus, or should I say, before He called me to himself. And as God walked me through my past, He showed me how strong these desires had become in my life. They had become habits in my old life. I was unspiritual and sold as a slave to sin, as Paul said of himself in Rom. 7:14.

I was reminded of the Grace that God had extended to me when Jesus called me. I remembered how I sat at home and started watching Christian programming and I just could not get enough of it. Then I found Second Baptist Church in Houston, and Dr. Young. I loved to hear him preach on TV. I looked at my future wife and told her that I had to go to church, and thus started me on the road to salvation. Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

You see our bodies love things that are not good for it. Things that make it feel good for a moment then it’s gone. So then our bodies want more. True or False?

Now most of us want to do good, but for some reason, most of have failed at one time or another.

Paul said in Rom. 7:15-20 that he wanted to good, but he could not. He only does what he hates.

Taken back to the night that I was so thirsty, my body was acting like the Spirit that lives in us. It thirst for God’s word, and when we neglect reading the word of God it thirsts, it grows week and restless. Desiring to be quenched. A war ensues as Paul speaks of in Rom. 7:23. And in this weakened state, oh, so often our sinful nature imprisons us.

Now the water is the word of God, just as I drank that glass of water and my body rejoiced. So does God’s Spirit that lives in us when read his word. God’s word brings peace to our restless Spirit, it comforts us, it feeds us, it brings us great joy, and it breaks the bonds of sin that have imprisoned us. For the word is Jesus Christ (John 1:1-2).

I have learned that if I neglect (Psa. 119:15) to do my studies of the word daily, I give room for sin to creep back into my life. Psalms 1:2 & 119:9 comes to mind when I think about this. Now I know this verse speaks of the law of the Lord, but I believe that if we spent more time studying God’s law, precepts, and decrees (Psa. 119:12) we would see the sin in our lives (Rom 7:7). No we are not under the law, but under Grace (Rom 6:14). But we should know God’s law and hide his word in our hearts (Psa. 119:11).

God give us wisdom and knowledge through his word (Pro. 2:6) and when we ask (Jas. 1:5), and these things are precious (Pro. 3:15). Wisdom comes from the word. The word gives you the ability to shield yourself from sin. The word comforts you in your times of trouble. The word gives life, joy, peace, knowledge, and freedom (John 8:31-32).

Jesus (Mat. 4) while in the wilderness did not fight off the temper with the power that was at his command. He used the word of God. In Hebrews 4:12 it says, “The word of God is living and active.” It Goes on to say that it is sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. In Eph. 6:14-17 Paul speaks of putting on the full armor of God. So let us read the word of God each day so it will teach us how to put on the full armor of God and how to wear it, so we can stand ready and firm in faith, truth, and righteousness until the day of salvation which comes from the Father through his son Jesus Christ.
